I had a Turtle Beach PX21 Headset that finally broke in the course of 10 months. For a Turtle Beach, that's probably a long time.

I was in a Skype call with one of my friends when suddenly the sound got super quiet and I could barely hear my friend talking. I thought it was his mic and he did too, until I started moving the wire around and the sound would go back to normal when I would hold it up. But that didn't last long and the sound just stayed distorted and quiet. I tested it by playing music through the headphones. I didn't think I could fix it and this was how my older headset broke as well. Plus, with the Turtle Beach, the right side was already falling apart.

That sucks. I had a Turtle Beach X11 that I bought to talk to my friends in a party and for some PC gaming in 2011 and they were pretty comfortable headphones but they lasted only 3 months.
Before they broke, it started malfunctioning after 3 weeks of use but I fixed that with cutting something and replacing it. I forgot how they broke exactly but I think the left side of the headphones went mute and 1 week later the other side went mute.
After that I had to use some cheap 1 dollar earphones for 3 days until I got headphones. They're coming apart but they're being hold together with tape and they're still working good.
    Turtle Beach, never again.

Yeah I had a Turtle Beach P21 or something like that and eventually it got weird, like the little box in the center of the wire to adjust levels had to have its wires in an exact way or else it wouldn't work, and then eventually it just stopped working all together. That thing lasted about 6 months, and then after that I got the official Playstation Headphones, and they've lasted 2 or 3 years.

Now I need to find a different brand of headsets that aren't Turtle Beaches. I heard that SteelSeries headsets are pretty good.

If you are looking for just a simple microphone deal to talk to folks, I have had a lot of luck with those new Marconi setups.

I just use some cheap sony headphones and a $20 standalone mic. Quality is pretty good

Get a Logitech G230, it's a great headset, and if you can catch it on sale, it can go for around $20. The quality of the mic is great, and the sound quality is pretty good as well.
